Job Description: Service Engineer (Electrical) – Offshore Vessel Repair
Overview:
The Service Engineer (Electrical) for offshore vessel repair is responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems onboard offshore support vessels (OSVs), drilling rigs, FPSOs, and other offshore units.This role ensures that vessel power distribution, control systems, and automation functions operate efficiently and comply with offshore industry safety and regulatory standards. The engineer will collaborate with ship superintendents, offshore managers, and classification societies to execute high-quality repairs and system upgrades.
Key Responsibilities:- Electrical System Maintenance & Repair:
- Diagnose and repair electrical faults in offshore vessel power systems, switchboards, generators, transformers, and distribution panels.
- Maintain and troubleshoot dynamic positioning (DP) systems, thruster control, and power management systems.
- Repair and maintain motor control centers (MCC), circuit breakers, and high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) electrical systems.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on ship electrical and electronic equipment.
- Installation & Upgrades:
- Install and test electrical components, automation systems, and safety equipment onboard offshore vessels.
- Upgrade vessel power distribution and control systems for compliance with operational requirements.
- Retrofit shore power connections and energy-efficient solutions for offshore applications.
- Testing & Commissioning:
- Conduct insulation resistance tests, load tests, megger tests, and short circuit analysis.
- Assist in commissioning new electrical systems after repairs, modifications, or installations.
- Ensure all tests meet offshore classification society requirements (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s, BV, etc.).
- Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure all work complies with offshore safety standards, including IMO, SOLAS, and class society regulations.
- Follow shipyard and offshore platform safety protocols when handling electrical systems.
- Conduct risk assessments before electrical maintenance or repair activities.
- Coordination & Reporting:
- Work closely with offshore vessel managers, technical superintendents, and onboard crew to ensure smooth electrical repair operations.
- Prepare detailed service reports, technical documentation, and system performance assessments.
- Provide on-site and remote technical support for vessels operating offshore.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in marine electrical maintenance, with a focus on offshore vessels and installations.
- Experience working with offshore support vessels (OSVs), drilling rigs, FPSOs, or similar vessels.
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of offshore vessel electrical systems, including switchboards, power management, and automation.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and maintaining dynamic positioning (DP) systems, thruster controls, and vessel automation.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Experience with PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), and power management systems.
- Knowledge of high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) electrical systems used in offshore vessels.
Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict repair deadlines.
- Willingness to travel offshore for vessel repairs and maintenance.
Certifications (Preferred):
- Dynamic Positioning (DP) Maintenance Certification (for DP-equipped vessels).
- High Voltage (HV) Safety Certification.
- STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) courses.
- OSHA or Offshore Safety Certification (BOSIET, HUET, or equivalent).
Work Environment:
- Offshore shipyards, dry docks, and onboard vessels operating in remote offshore locations.
- Exposure to high-voltage systems, marine weather conditions, and confined spaces.
- May require international travel, offshore assignments, and emergency call-outs.
