Job Summary:

The Assistant Engineer (AE) will support the Director of Engineering and Sustainability in maintaining and managing the hotel's physical infrastructure, equipment, and facilities. This role involves providing assistance in the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other mechanical systems, as well as engineering project works.

The Assistant Engineer will help to ensure that all systems and facilities operate efficiently and safely to maintain a high standard of guest comfort.

Strategic Responsibilities/ Duties (but not limited to):

Facility Maintenance & Operations:

  • Assist with regular inspection, maintenance, and repair of the hotel's mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Support preventive maintenance programs to ensure that all equipment functions effectively and efficiently.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to the building's systems, including air conditioning, heating, and water supply systems.

Technical Support:

  • Provide technical assistance for daily operations, addressing any mechanical or electrical issues promptly to minimize downtime.
  • Assist with the setup and maintenance of equipment in guest rooms, conference areas, and public spaces.
  • Ensure that electrical and mechanical systems are in compliance with safety regulations and building codes.

Project Assistance:

  • Provide assistance in coordinating small-scale construction or renovation projects.
  • Help oversee and assist contractors or subcontractors working on renovation works to ensure work is completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.
  • Maintain records of any construction, renovation, or builder's work undertaken.

Team Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the engineering team and other hotel departments (Housekeeping, FO, F&B, etc.) to ensure smooth operations and timely completion of tasks.
  • Provide support during large-scale repairs or renovations under the supervision of the Chief Engineer.
  • Assist with training new engineering staff and interns when necessary.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow safety protocols to maintain a safe working environment for all hotel staff and guests.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and national regulations, as well as the hotel's policies and procedures.
  • Perform regular safety inspections and report potential hazards.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain records of all repairs, maintenance schedules, and work completed, as per hotel requirements.
  • Report on equipment performance and suggest improvements or replacements when necessary.
  • Keep track of inventory for spare parts and tools used in maintenance tasks.

Emergency Response:

  • Assist with emergency repair work during after-hours or as needed.
  • Respond to urgent breakdowns and system failures, especially in guest-facing areas like lighting, air conditioning, or plumbing.

Key Skills and Requirements:

Education:

  • High Technical certificate or Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or related field) preferred.
  • Relevant certifications in building maintenance, HVAC, plumbing, or electrical systems (preferred).

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar role, preferably within the hospitality industry.
  • Experience in handling maintenance tasks, including electrical and plumbing systems, HVAC, and mechanical equipment.

Skills:

  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to provide technical guidance to subordinates.
  • Leadership skills is required to gain rapport & support from Engineering Supervisors and Technicians
  • Good understanding of building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and hotel maintenance standards.
  • Ability to use maintenance tools and equipment safely.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle emergency situations efficiently.
  • Independent, takes initiatives and able to work with minimal supervision

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and work in various positions for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work in different environmental conditions (heat, cold, humidity, etc.) depending on the maintenance area.
  • Comfortable working in different environmental conditions, including construction areas and hotel spaces under renovation.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time position, with the possibility of working on weekends, holidays, and evenings based on hotel needs.
  • On-call availability may be required for emergencies or urgent maintenance.
  • The work environment may include indoor and outdoor tasks.
  • Work will take place in various hotel areas, including public spaces, back-of-house, guest rooms and areas under renovation etc.
